The Building
The school of Chrisso was built circa 1890s and is another neoclassical building that followed the format of the first schools built by Kapodistrias (1830-1840). Although there is no information available about its inauguration, it must have been with particular brilliance, given the great interest at that time for education. The designing of the building was undertaken by a foreign engineer and according to one version, it is attributed to Ernst Ziller, a major architect of other municipal buildings in Greece. Like many buildings of the same era, the school expressed the architectural and educational concepts of its time and was built in order to house the Community Office, the District Court and the School (Scolarcheio) which was attended by approximately 200 students of the surrounding area (Delphi, Sernikaki, Desfina). It is worth mentioning that the distinguished painter Spyros Papaloukas (1892-1957) from Desfina graduated from this school in 1908. Later on, the Elementary School (from which the collector Mr. Ilias E. Daradimos graduated) and the Public Telephone Center were also housed in this very building.
